Hayling Relay 2019

Posted by Becki Ralf on 21 August 2019

If there is one day in the calendar which makes Victory a unique club to belong to, it’s Hayling Relay day.

As the 11 teams converged at relay HQ in Northney for a day of running, banter and cake, you couldn’t fail to notice the rain had come along too. Whilst John G. delivered the pre-race briefing it fell in what only can be described as biblical proportions.

Brief over, it was time to venture out. The team’s first leg runners were sent out two or three at a time at 5-minute intervals. As each team departed, sportily applauded and cheered by all, the sun emerged and shone for the duration. Perfect!

The event consists of 12 legs ranging from approximately 1.5 miles to just shy of 3. Each team has 4 runners. Two of the legs are actually not on the Island, one takes us off and one brings us back on; always a bit of a worry with bridge traffic but all okay this year.

2019 was a clockwise year, often a tougher direction due to the south-westerly prevailing wind making the two seafront legs challenging. This certainly was the case, runners arrived at the checkpoints having worked doubly hard against the elements.

The inter-team support and camaraderie comes to the fore at these checkpoints. Smiles and waves greet each incoming team car and shouts of “Runner!” pierce through the chatter to warn of an arriving athlete. The odd funny/alarming story can be shared which create memories that remain with us well after the day is over. Three spring to mind: Gary H. fell over before the event had even commenced! (funny and alarming), Dave’s truck stolen! (alarming) and a bird poo’d on my head while we were waiting at the end of leg 10 (alarming for me, funny for everyone else).

As is normal when enjoying yourself, time flies and before we knew it teams were arriving back at HQ to cheer the runners in. The excitement doesn’t stop there though as the results often reveal some surprises.

Whilst we all gorged ourselves on the aforementioned cake, John and Pete collated the final results and counted up the money. This amounted to £200 before any cake takings had been added, so a tidy sum.

A great thanks goes to all of the organisers, timers, drivers, cake bakers and cheerers who followed the event around the Island. Team 10 triumphed (pictured below), great result. Everyone’s a winner though after what was a lovely day out.

Roll on 2020.
